From there, we discovered the elegant and generous forms of European 19th century leather furniture and we were inspired to bring such traditional craft back home to Bangalore, exploring these designs in an Indian context.

the history of our pieces

Our company’s origins lie in our relationship with leather. Beginning in 1986, we developed a business processing and finishing high-quality leather goods for export from India, building ourselves a reputation across Europe.

From there, we discovered the elegant and generous forms of European 19th century leather furniture and we were inspired to bring such traditional craft back home to Bangalore, exploring these designs in an Indian context.

In 1994 we sent four of our experienced craftsmen to the Netherlands, where they refined their skills in the specialist manufacture of deep buttoned leather furniture. With this exchange of knowledge and skills between India and Europe, Chester’s was born.

We remain the sole furniture maker in India to have worked with mouton fauve, the renowned French lambskin leather coveted for its unique finish and ageing qualities. Through this we developed our practical skills as well an acute sensitivity to our materials. We now work only with the highest grade bovine hides, finished to our specifications and dyed in house, to create an exclusive collection of four core leathers.
We give the rest of our materials the same care and attention. Across our workshops our experienced upholsterers, joiners and hand dyers continue to develop and produce the timeless designs that first inspired our journey into furniture making.

Whether a Chesterfield, or a piece from our Classic or Modern collections, all our designs are selected for their timeless and iconic forms. We draw from history to produce designs that we know are not only comfortable and long-lasting, but have a legacy that has already stood the test of time and which brings with it its own unique narrative.

We are best known for our Chesterfields: deep buttoned sofas, first made in the 19th century. This classic design is defined by its combination of generous form, refined detail, and hard-wearing build. These qualities have come to define Chester’s approach across our collections.

Our understanding of luxury is rooted in the idea of time.

The luxury of a Chester’s piece comes from the weeks and months we spend carefully preparing our leather and our frames, crafting both into a perfect form. Chester’s luxury also comes from the years our craftspeople spend as apprentices and the lifetime they spend refining their skills. Most of all, the luxury of a Chester’s piece is found in its longevity and the quality of the time spent using them.

Our pieces are, at their core, sustainable. They are made to be enjoyed by generations and to develop their own unique patina with age, with wear, and with use.

The quality of our work extends to our service. As a family-run company, we are sensitive to our customers’ needs, making them our priority. Each Chester’s piece is custom made in our frameworks and upholstery factory in Peenya, Bangalore, to specifications finalised together with the customer.

We apply our deep understanding of upholstery and carpentry in choosing the right materials and detailing for each piece in the context of the place it will occupy, whether that will be an office or a domestic interior. This catalogue provides an overview of our core collection to help begin the conversations with which these relationships are built. We remain available to our customers all the way through the design and manufacture process and no chair leaves our factory without being inspected by our founder.
